Research of other opening sequences

I have researched to find some film openings for inspiration and to analyse the techniques they use. I have chosen 2 films for this.

The first of these is the infamous film – ‘The Godfather’. The opening sequence to this film is strikingly similar to what i had in mind, although the actual storyline ittself is completely different. My idea was to have a man sitting in a very dark room, badly beaten up and reading a letter. Meanwhile there would be abosolute silence in the background with no special effects and a constant low-key lighting. In ‘The Godfather’, the man may be in perfect health, but he is delivering some ineteresting dialogue to open the film and get the audience’s minds going. The camera fades-in to a close-up shot of the main character. His smart dress and composure connotates that the man is quite powerful and has status. The frame zooms out slowly, to show another character in the room just next to the camera. Also, another man supplies the main character with a drink. When this happens, selective sound is used to emphasise the glass being put on the table, which could also connote  that the character out of shot is rather nervous, only adding to the tense atmosphere. Although we know other people are there, we do not get any kind of visual on them within the sequence, as the camera is always focused on the main character. The simplistic but original nature of the very first opening scene is what i am looking for in my opening.

The second opening i have analysed is from ‘Goodfellas’. This opening is not too similar to what i have in mind, but nonetheless i think it is worth a mention. Three men are driving in a car when they hear a knocking sound coming from the boot. They are all dressed in black suits, and have rather tired expressions. This connotes that they are travelling back from having done something. Their similar costumes and relaxed atmosphere around each denotes that the characters know each other quite well. The diagetic sound of the knocking is prominent and is set out against the relatively quiet, night time backdrop. They pull over, open the boot and stab and shoot the man inside. The audience do not know that the men know about the ‘prisoner’, which makes it all the more shocking. Again, this is very low-key lit, and although i do not intend to have violence in my opening (rather evidence that violence has been commited), i think the crime/gangster theme is good for me to explore in gaining a wider imagination.

Coursework Beginnings!

As I am taking the film option for my coursework, I am going to have to start thinking about the audience my piece will be aimed towards. However, I have to establish the genre of my piece.

I have been thinking about aiming for a more cult genre, with a unique style.

I am going to start thinking about how to go about my audience research.

  • Interviewing is an obvious technique, but there are several things I need to get out of it.
  • I have decided to create a questionnaire as one method of obtaining information, however i could also use audio to record a more informal interview.
  • I am going to interview people that are my target audience (16-25), as it makes sense to see what my target audience want from my film. It would be pointless interviewing someone that isn’t from my target audience as essentially, their opinion doesn’t matter in the production of my film!

I feel that as an interviewer I am able to come up with some questions on the spot, which are quite open. However, I could engage more with interviewee by seeming more interested instead of an apparently lazy attitude. I feel I can make a relaxed atmosphere, but could make it more interesting for the audience just by adding simple things like making small talk beforehand, to loosen them up so to speak.

Audience Research Action Plan

Week 1: decide on a definite genre/rough storyline for the film and decide questions for interview and poll. Research other openings of interest and post on blog.

Week 2: Create questionnaire and print off. Put poll onto Facebook to access wider audience. Use equipment to get audio interview with people that are target audience. This will include people in my sixth form and other friends of friends. By gathering lots of different results I will have made a comprehensive detail of what my target audience want.

Week 3: Gather data. write summaries on what i have found. Promote my questionnaire further to obtain a large collection of results. Do some statistical analysis. Put audio data into one place so it makes sense, bring together the audio files + finish editing of the video. Put everything onto blog.

Week 4: Manipulate idea to serve the target audience the best. Perhaps get some general ideas from audience. Start my filming and finish by the end of this week. As it is half term this would be the best time as there are not as many restrictions with actors/locations etc. By the end of the week I aim to have completed all the filming I need to do.

Pitch for coursework ideas (19/1/10)

Footage: We will begin by fading in to a man sitting in a chair in he middle of a dark/damp room. He is badly beaten, and almost unconscious. He is holding a piece of paper in his hand. The camera is home video. As the man begins to groan a voice from behind the camera shouts ‘READ IT’. The man in the chair is obviously scared by him, and starts to read. As he starts reading, explaining about how he is responsible for the deaths of many people, the titles roll.

THE FOLLOWING ARE TWO DIFFERENT ALTERNATIVES TO THE ENDING OF THE SCENE:

As the titles finish, the man’s reading fades out, and Narration briefly explains how ‘it wasn’t always like this’ (or something along those lines). Fades in to a high-key lighting scene, the man looks fit and healthy, but is running. A couple of small time crooks are chasing him. We will make it quite clear that this is not directly connected to the opening scene. This scene will have high-key lighting and lots of camera movement to contrast from the first scene. The main character manages to hide, and the crooks pass leaving him safe. The final shot of our opening sequence will show the man spotting a package in the corner of his hiding place. END.

We have a few quick shots of the man waking up/ getting ready for work/ leaving house etc.

In Class Viewing of ‘Jerry MacGuire’ and ‘American Beauty’

Jerry MacGuire: The character of Jerry MacGuire narrates the opening sequence, and comes across as an opportunist sports agent. As he explains all of the talented sportsmen/women he is targeting, we get a sense that he knows what he is talking about. When we get a visual of the character talking to other people, I think he comes across as arrogant. My first impression of the character is that he certainly knows what he is talking about, but will do anything to get what he wants in his career.

American Beauty: I am analysing the character of Lester Vernon. He is a married father of 1, but comes across as a man who has certainly seen better days. We get a sense that he is drifting away from his wife through the narration and his somewhat uncaring attitude towards her. In the narration he also describes himself as ‘a loser’, showing he obviously doesn’t have a lot of self-confidence or motivation. This is also shown through his slow, clumsy movements on set.

Example Character: Freddy: male, 80, scientific genius, seen as a little bit insane, has a cat as a companion who he is never seen without, has been 27 failed burglaries at his house.

Homework: Print Exemplars

PM Magazine: I decided to give this a mark of 38/60 which is a low band 3 mark. I believe that the mise-en-scene of the piece was one of the factors not properly adressed. There seems to be high-key colours on one page, then low-key on the next. Also, not much imagination seemed to be used with the images on the print, they are all quite conventional, as is the text font used. However, the headlines used are quite eye-catching, and there is variety in the images used in terms of shot distance. All images used are appropriate to the piece too.

Musicking Magazine: I decided to give this 34/60 which is a high band 2 mark. The front page is not very eye-catching and seems rather bland. There doesn’t seem to be much originality in the piece, and the contents page is also an example of this. There is not many different bright colours in the magazine, and the fonts seem quite orthodox. However, the feature page uses a good collage of pictures, and the interview clearly seperates the questions from the answers so the reader can easily negotiate the article.

Audience Research

We have been looking at the target audience for the music magazine ‘MOJO’. Here is an example of somebody from the target audience of the magazine:

Billy: male, mid-40s (magazine could appeal to younger people too), middle class, older music fan, plays an instrument.

The magazine features predominantly older artists, which would predominantly appeal to the older generation. However, i do appreciate some younger music fans like music from before their time. The quality of the paper and language in the articles suggest a more middle class audience. Also, the price of £4.10 for a 2006 issue, suggests it would not be cheap to maintain a subscription.  Technical musical language in articles also show that music would be an interest/hobby to anyone, not just an off-hand interest. Most consumers of this magazine would buy every month, as it makes sense for the consumer to continue their interest of music through buying the magazine. Also, if the consumer is making a one-off purchase of a magazine, it is unlikely they would choose MOJO due to the price and in that MOJO does not put itself out there to appeal to a wider, more modern music audience.

In Class (11/1/10)

For Mondays lesson with Mr Cole, we were set a task in which we had to input our own ideas into a script and then pass it around the room. This resulted in a few continuation issues, obviously, but here is the script that i ended up with (underlined is the input from the class).

Sarah’s eyes opened as she looked around, all she could see was fields. It was clear Sarah was in emptiness. She heard a dull thud. It was a falling object hitting the concrete floor, but where was it coming from? As she set off to explore this noise, she tripped on a soft object. It was getting warm and she was worried about her shoppping. Just then, a wizard appeared for some reason and she was knocked to the ground, where she lay unconcious.

I would like to point out i didn’t write any of the above.

Brainstorming for practical work (4/1/10)

What do you want to achieve as an individual from the production of the practical work?

I want to create a solid piece of work which helps me get a good grade that i have been aiming for. Also, i wish to develop my knowledge of media further as i am considering future career prospects.

Do you want to work alone or in a pair?

I would not mind working alone although i would prefer to work in a pair, as the work i produced in a pair before i felt was good. As of yet, i am not completely confident in my own knowledge and imagination to undertake a complete piece whilst gaining a high grade.

Statment which woud be feedback from the marker:

This finished piece is well rounded and shows aspects of excellence. There are some original ideas within the piece, and helps to create a world in which the audience find entertaining. There has obviously been some background research performed, and this shows in the final piece.

I am unsure at the minute whether i am going to take the film or magazine option. I am more inclined to take the film option, as i have produced work in that field before. However, i think it might be a wiser decision to choose the print option as there seems to be more scope for ideas meaning it could be slightly easier to produce a final piece for it.

Evaluationof example practical work:

1. 40/60. The editing for meaning to viewer and the use of sound categories were not excellent as there were parts where the sound disappeared completely, and i could not relate to the piece a lot. The way it was edited did not have a partiular impact on me, and it was not clearly cut as an opening piece. However, the variety of shots, visual effects and use of title effects were very good.

Representations Of Disability (In Class – 14/12/09)

Images that first come into my mind on the subject of disability: some form of support (wheelchair/crutches), hospital, learning disabilities, abuse.

First impressions of extract of ‘Inside I’m Dancing’: set in a care home, none of the disabled seem to be standing up, not a very happy place, disabled treated almost like children (watching kids shows on TV).

I think that following the main characters arrival, he will not manage to settle into the environment of the care home very well. I think there might be some kin of disruption shortly after the start of the movie, and a resolution may be hard to come by.

Image of Michael in the living room – Denotates: diabled sitting in a living room with carers standing up around them. Michael is sitting away from everyone else. Connotates: That the people standing up are more able and in control, also that the disabled have no identity anymore and are treated like one of a herd. Michael seems very lonely as he is sitting away from everybody else. He also has a dreamy expression which shows he isn’t very engaged.

Image of Rory in the van – Denotates: Rory is sitting in the van, he looks quite unhappy and we can see the headrest of his wheelchair in the background. He has a piercing and spiky hair which makes him stand out. Connotates: That Rory is unhappy in his current situation shown by his facial expression, and that he stands out and is obviously not worried about being different.

Image of Rory and the other disabled people – Denotates: Rory on one side, with lots of colourful clothes etc, and the bland, uninterested others in the background on the other side of the screen. Connotates: Rory seems separated from the others due to the positioning on screen , and the fact that he has colour to his costume could suggest that over time in the care home, the other people’s conditions have deteriorated.

‘Mise-En-Scene’ of the extract: The lighting t=is low key and rather grey in the extract, which could reflect the mood. The disabled characters are all in very bland clothing and have no make-up which could suggest they live very mundane lives. Also, there are many weird noises in the background. Close-up shots of the disabled people show their low facial expressions. Rory, however, who is a new arrival to the care home has a colourful costume showing he has maybe not been affected by the life in the care home yet.

Discuss the ways in which Disability is represented in the extract

Opening Statements: Society has many pre-conceived ideas and stereotypes of disability, some of which, are represented in the clip of the film ‘Inside I’m Dancing’ through methods such as ‘Mise-En-Scene’, camera work, and semiotics.

Mise-en-scene: In this clip we can see that the colours of the scenes are very drab and it uses ‘washed out’ colours like brown, grey and black. This is trying to show us that these sorts of disabled people’s homes are boring and sad and that nothing exciting is happening. The clothes that the people are wearing also showing us that either the people who dress them are the old fashioned, not modern people, or the people in the home are.

The close ups on Rory in particular enables us to fully see his emotions, full facial shots take the focus off the surroundings and purely on to the character; this helps the audience to fully appreciate the emotions Rory is feeling when he’s entering the home. The long shot of the home helps us to get a better picture of what the home is like; the long shot helps us to appreciate where they actually are; they aren’t in some horrible home but actually a lovely building. The camera work inside the home is very useful; a mixture of shots helps us to see a broad range of the content, the residents and also the interior decor.

The sound of this extract has plenty of impact on the feeling of the piece. The diegetic sound in the background, including that of the sad theme music and the music coming from the television show that they have a very depressing life style and that they are very over controlled. There are also other selective sounds later in the extract such as the accent of Rory being very harsh without taking the piss.

The editing in this clip is such that it portrays the contrast in styles when Rory enters the premises, as it skips from a calm shot of the people in the home who look relatively ordinary, to the completely different shot of Rory who is wearing a nose ring and fashioning a punk-style attire.

Media Ownership (In Class 11/12/09)

The media industry can be described as an ‘Oligopoly’. This means a very small elite amount of companies have a great control of a large share of the industry. People such as Rupert Murdoch and his company (News Corporation) are ‘Oligarchs’, that control a large section of the media industry.

Through buying into the British market (IPC Media), Time Warner can influence and promote other products by using it as a platform. This is ‘Synergy’ – using products together to try and flood the media market and control it themselves.

Disadvantages for the consumer: not fair representation of all products so could be missing out, flooded with advertising.

The consumer that is affected can be the public or even (amateur) producers.

THE MEDIA INDUSTRY: DEATH OF DIVERSITY – (headline for unfair representation)
